EP. 9 Version 2.0 - Things I've learned since I live in Germany

12/9/2020

Comments

I drew this second version a few months ago. This time I will explain more about this journey.
Some of them are the same as the first version in English. (Click here to read the old version.)
Actually my idea is easy coming. Things about me that I had never realized until some of my close friends, who don’t live in Germany but they knew some about German lifestyle, asked me and we started to think and talk about this.
Picture
I can finish pizza alone
Picture
1 box 1 person 1 meal

That’s true. My eating portion now is also bigger than before.
Last time when I came back to visit my family in Thailand. I eat like “double asian portions”.

Of course! For me food over there is more delicious than here and I did 4x.
Yes! I gained weight.

Update: I never have a problem with Italian style pizza. I tried once with Pizza Hut and TGF Pizza but I couldn't finish them.
I guess it's because of dough.

Open bottle without opener.
Picture
To find a wine opener is sometimes easier than to find a bottle opener

First time I saw people open a bottle so easily with stuff around them (keys, spoon, water bottle, ruler, etc...)
That’s just Woh!!! Then they started to educate me about “lever”(a physics theory).
Now I can open a beer bottle with a lighter or with an other bottle sometimes but mostly....
My hand got hurt and a lighter is almost broken.

Wifi = WLAN
Picture
“Wifi” in German they called “WLAN”.
Pronounced “way-run (with L)"

 Waste Stuff Story
Picture
People separate most of the waste but it doesn’t mean that everyone likes that.

I like to separate waste, because I have seen the problem if we don’t separate waste from my hometown. Anyway some waste people or me have no idea which type of waste they are. The easy answer is “go to a waste container” (Restmüll, Hausmüll).
Some people said, if everything goes to the waste container, it’s still better than throwing plastic waste into a paper container.

(I have no sentences for them.….)

They say exactly!
Picture
"When will you come by?" “in 4 Minutes”

not around, not about, not like Asian style.

I guess because people always see the time table from a public transport like a “countdown”. So they just say what they see.

In Thailand…….. Forget about this.
People always say “around 15 Min.” which means 30 Min. or “be right back” which means “in an hour”.
If they can do like what they said to you. You are lucky.

Eat rice with a fork
Picture
And now I can eat rice with a fork but still with the left hand.

In Asian we use fork on a left hand but to eat rice we use a spoon with a right hand.
And also some people use only a spoon with a right hand.
In East Asia countries like China or Japan people eat rice with chopsticks, which I couldn't do that well also.

I've learned how to eat Döner without using a napkin.
Picture
If I have to relate skill to Thai food. It must be Ice-cream on bread with stuff called “Pai-Thong”. ไอศกรีมไผ่ทอง

Döner, Kebab or Döner Kebab  here is like a fast food or street food in Asian. Things that you have to try in Germany, not just Knuckle pork or curry sausage. Vegetarian version will be falafel, feta cheese or salad. My favourite is falafel with durum bread or what some people called Yufka. Döner is always huge.

Here is my favorite Döner/Falafel shops in Mainz, Germany
Dönerstag, Mainz
Le Cedre du Liban, Mainz

And how Pai-Thong ice-cream looks like.

Birkenstock with socks is awesome.
Picture
I’m not surprised why it’s a one of German cliche.

It’s more comfortable than without socks. I recommend that.

A letter from German customs
If I could receive my presents from Thailand without a letter from German customs, that would be lucky me.
If I could receive my presents from Thailand without a letter from German customs, that would be lucky me.

I got twice letters from German customs, because I ordered stuff from Ebay, which showed on their shop “from UK”. But the stuff came probably from India. That’s the thing that you have to consider and calculate. Is that worth to order?

Last time was my birthday presents from my family. And the package is small like we called here “Päckchen” or “a small parcel”. The customs wrote to me that I have to pay tax at least 25€ If I want to get that. Or…. just ignored and they will send the package back.

That was my birthday presents… Why do I have to pay tax for my presents?!

So I called my family and asked, what did they send to me? a diamond? an IPhone?
The answer was a plastic toy, a coffee mug and a birthday card.

!!!!!!!!

I got all the stuff a year after my birthday.

That’s all… just for this ep. Version 2.0
But to live in Germany. It has things to learn everyday.

I would like to share this TED Talk . His talk inspired me for my illustrator book "Knaggig".

“(...)When you moved to different country. There are 3 ways that you can relate to the culture:
You can confront, complain or conform.
When you confront, you believe that your behaviors are the right behaviors.
When you complain, what happens is that you will isolate yourself into social bubbles of foreigners living in segregation with the society. When you adapt your way to behave when you conform to the whole society, then you can truly benefit from diversity. But that implies that you are observing, learning, understanding the behaviors of others, and adapting your own, so that it fits with the behaviors of the society you are in. (...)”
