Dieses Jahr hatte ich die besondere Ehre, bei der Lange Nacht der Museen Stuttgart 2025 als Illustratorin interviewt zu werden! Petra Xayaphoum von Stadtkind Stuttgart führte das Gespräch mit mir, in dem ich über meine Arbeit als Illustratorin sprach und meine aktuellen Werke präsentierte.

 (...)Die Arbeiten der preisgekrönten Illustratorin Mayha Suaysom dürften dem ein oder anderen in der City schon begegnet sein: Entweder beim Walk and Draw durch die Straßen Stuttgarts oder mit ihrer Portraitzeichenmaschine „IlluMayha“, trifft man die Künstlerin immer wieder an den verschiedenen Orten der Stadt. Suaysoms Fokus liegt auf Fragen zur Diversität und interkulturellen Kommunikation. Zu sehen war das am Abend etwa in ihrem Projekt „Same same but different“, in dem sie asiatisch-deutsche Essgewohnheiten und interkulturelle Sprachunterschiede malerisch-humorvoll hinterfragt. So ist etwa „Eiskaffee“ noch lange nicht dasselbe wie „Iced Coffee“.
Gebürtig aus Bangkok, mit Stationen in Berlin und Mainz, gründete die studierte Innenarchitektin in Stuttgart das Zebra-Collektive, das sich im Bereich Vielfalt engagiert. In großformatigen Wimmelbildern erzählt sie vom Leben in der Stadt, und wer genau hinschaut, entdeckt darin die ein oder andere Katze, die zu ihren Lieblingstieren zählt. I love the phrase "am Eck", and that sparked a conversation with the VHS team—leading to a project that captures the character of the location and showcases how VHS offers so much more than just German language classes! :) I love this project and want to share more about it because it beautifully blends 2D and 3D elements. Maybe it’s my background as an interior architect and set stylist for a magazine—after working in 3D design for years, I naturally translate spatial awareness into my illustrations. I’m very happy to work on this project with five other young curators and researchers from different institutions. Our exhibit, Erste Klasse Rassismus (First school class racism), explores racism in Stuttgart, showing both its history and how it still affects people today.
​ Because the topic is heavy, I’ve used my playful illustrations to add a lighter touch for the audience. In some pieces, I’ve flipped traditional ideas—like showing “white†elements in bright colors, to offer a new view. In others, only white figures are shown speaking and sharing their thoughts, while people of color (PoC) are shown as silent observers, with just their eyes open to “accept†what they see. Through these illustrations, I hope to help people think about racial issues from a new perspective.

Hi, Hello, Hallo Berlinerssss… (EN Text below) 🐻 Fast einen Monat werde ich meine Zeit in Berlin verbringen (Walk&Draw, Weddingmarkt, Art Week Besuch,…) und gleichzeitig suche ich nach Möglichkeiten, dort mit euch und mit meinen Kompetenzen etwas zu machen. 🌞 Habt ihr Lust und vielleicht Zeit in Berlin?
